MATERIALS MANAGER
The job has primary responsibility for the development and implementation of the corporate strategic materials policy and in the best possible pricing for new and existing major contracts. It is important to understand that KDL operates within a highly competitive market and that the Materials Manager will accept primary responsibility for the materials element of KDL quotations for new jobs; highly-developed commercial instincts and negotiating abilities are therefore an essential pre-requisite. KDL operates sophisticated purchasing systems and candidates will have to be highly systems-literate. Specific duties are as follows:
Strategic
Develop corporate purchasing strategy. Explore pricing possibilities available via different channels of distribution
Accept full responsibility for the supply of materials pricing in the compilation of quotations to customers. This will often mean working under severe pressure to meet tight deadlines Develop key suppliers; negotiate supply terms and conditions
Develop and monitor supplier key performance indicators; ensure suppliers are aware of performance. Work with suppliers to add value to their services Develop and agree departmental kpi`s; ensure performance standards are constantly improved Maintain a constant margin improvement programme Display imagination in the use of systems to improve department performance and relentlessly drive down purchasing costs Purchasing
Control MRP and consequent materials purchasing and rescheduling
Flag up any materials problems in sufficient time to solve the problems or allow Production to develop an alternative production programme. Ensure suppliers report on any threats to strategic materials Minimise value of stocks, stores and wip by ensuring materials supply is co-ordinated and is linked closely to the production (capacity) plan
Work closely with the Planning Department to ensure materials are available to satisfy the demands of the production plan Maintain an intimate knowledge of the EFACS purchasing and materials systems. Develop & maintain a thorough knowledge of all other relevant Company EFACS systems particularly those which are used by, or extract data from, the purchasing and materials systems. Thoroughly understand the links between various EFACS modules and what common data is used by EFACS Ensure purchasing budgets are beaten or, at worst, met. Report on performance of the Department in meeting targets Staffing
Ensure all staff are properly trained
Ensure all staff have job descriptions and understand their responsibilities and accountabilities Ensure all staff understand the importance of their jobs and are fully motivated Ensure all staff are set agreed performance targets and are routinely assessed General
Ensure there exists a constant and rigorous assessment of departmental working practices, systems and methods
Ensure systems are in place to monitor agreed departmental targets and that departmental performance is routinely appraised and reported on Suitable candidates will have the following:

Some form of Purchasing qualification
Preferably graduate level but at least "A" level education
Experience:
Strong purchasing experience in at least two different computerised purchasing environments
Manufacturing environment
Excellent systems skills preferably gained in a manufacturing environment with a high materials turnover
MRP
Must have experience of purchasing electronic components in an organisation of significant size; ideally would also have experience of: sub-contract purchasing (particularly machining and sheet metal) electrical-type purchasing (i.e. cable, wire, connectors, etc.) castings and plastics experience far east purchasing experience Must have an intimate knowledge of the marketplace; how it works; who is in it.
